Shortening the time needed to do your hair. One braid at a time

Wearable Braiding Assistance Device

Our mission

The mission of this project is to find a way to possible shorten the time needed for people with curly hair to do their braids.

Our challenge

The Problem: The Hair Day Burden
For individuals with super curly or kinky hair, maintaining protective hairstyles, such as braids, twists, or locs, is a necessity for hair health and personal expression. However, these styles come with a massive time tax. A single session can take anywhere from 5 to 12 hours, effectively consuming an entire day. For busy professionals, mothers, and students, finding this hair day in a hectic schedule is a significant logistical and physical headache.

Despite the high demand, the textured haircare market remains significantly underrepresented in terms of hardware innovation. Current tools are often manual or designed for straight hair textures, leaving those with curly/kinky hair to rely on grueling, manual processes.

Our solution

The goal of this project is to develop a wearable device that integrates seamlessly into the traditional braiding process. By either assisting the user鈥檚 movements or automating the repetitive braiding/twisting motions, the product will significantly reduce the time spent in the chair. It鈥檚 about merging industrial design with mechatronics to turn a 10-hour labor into a streamlined, efficient experience.

This is a great opportunity to not only persue this project, but have professional staff able to help and guide the process. This is something that can often be a challenge when persuing individualy
