Sam followed the Smart Cities and Energy Systems track within the Msc Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Systems.
With my background in Biomedical Engineering, I wanted to improve lives by using technology. Now, I鈥檓 applying that same mindset into urban environments: using AI to create smarter, more efficient, and sustainable cities. One of the projects I鈥檝e worked on uses image recognition to detect solar panels on rooftops, which helps to predict potential overloads on the electricity grid. It鈥檚 a small glimpse of how AI can support the energy transition. Industries like construction and energy still depend a lot on manual processes, which opens up a huge opportunity for automation, increased efficiency, and better decision-making.
That鈥檚 what makes the Smart Cities field so exciting!
The interdisciplinary program has allowed me to extend my engineering background with knowledge in machine learning, energy, and construction. The flexible curriculum and hands-on projects have given me the chance to dive deep into the algorithmic side of AI while also learning about with the real-world challenges of the built environment.
