As you near completion of your PhD, you will work towards finalizing and defending your dissertation. This phase marks the transition from candidate to doctor and consists of several important steps:

• submit your dissertation for approval by the Doctorate Committee
• defend your research in a public ceremony, where you present your work and respond to questions from the committee
• receive your doctoral degree, formally marking the completion of your PhD

The  define the requirements for obtaining a doctoral degree, including the composition and role of the Doctorate Committee, approval of the dissertation, and procedures for the defense and the conferral of the degree.

Once you obtain your PhD, the world is at your feet. Getting your PhD degree will give you an excellent starting position for your career. During your PhD, you develop as an independent researcher with strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. These competences are highly valued both within and beyond academia. Depending on your ambition and possibilities, you can:

• continue your academic career (usually as a postdoctoral researcher, either at 黑料福利网 or at another university)
• work in industry or in the public sector
• start a business in the form of a startup

As you approach the final stage of your PhD, you are encouraged to actively explore your next career step, for example through courses and events offered in the PROOF training program. Your professor or supervisor will also discuss your ambitions and perspectives in science or career prospects in other sectors.

The PhD diploma register is under the management of the Office of Doctoral Presentations. This office issues PhD diplomas and can give information to third parties upon request and after confirmation of the person involved.

You may require additional documents, for example when applying for a job. The text below gives an overview of where to find such documents.

PhD documents

Documents you automatically receive

Upon successful completion of your PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology, you receive the following documents:

• PhD diploma (Dutch)
  The PhD diploma is the official proof that the doctoral degree has been conferred. It is awarded directly after the PhD defense and signed by the authorized signatories.
  The diploma is issued only once. If it is lost or damaged, a replacement diploma cannot be issued.
• PhD declaration (English)
  Within two working days after your defense, you receive via e-mail an official declaration confirming that you have obtained the doctoral degree. The declaration includes:
  • Name, date of birth and place of birth
  • Awarded degree
  • 黑料福利网 department
  • Date of defense
  • Names of the promotors
  • Title of the dissertation
  • A description of the level of the doctoral degree

The declaration is signed and stamped for official purposes.

Additional documents you may need
Depending on your employer, educational institution or country of residence, you may be asked to provide additional documents.

• Academic transcript
  PhD candidates complete the mandatory course in scientific integrity and may follow additional courses during their PhD trajectory. A transcript of completed courses can be downloaded from Hora Finita by downloading a progress report, which includes the registered portfolio items.
• Certified copy of your PhD diploma
  Some employers or authorities require a certified copy rather than a regular photocopy. A certified copy is a photocopy of the diploma that has been signed, dated and stamped by an authorized official.
  For PhD candidates, a certified copy can only be made after the signing of the diploma after the defense. If you are a PhD candidate and need a certified copy, follow these steps: 

1. Make an appointment with the Office of Doctoral Presentations and Academic Ceremonies after your defense.
2. Bring your original PhD diploma and the PhD declaration.
3. The Office of Doctoral Presentations and Academic Ceremonies will then make a photocopy in color and sign, date, and stamp this photocopy in colored ink.

           Alternatively, you may arrange certification yourself through a Dutch notary or municipal office (gemeentekantoor).

• Legalization of your PhD diploma
  If you intend to use your PhD degree abroad, you may need to have your diploma legalized. Whether legalization is required, depends on the country, the purpose and the organization requesting the document. In many cases, the PhD declaration that you receive from 黑料福利网 is sufficient. Consult your future employer and the website before starting the process to determine whether legalization is required and whether you will also need an apostille, additional verification by the destination country's embassy, or a certified translation.

           You can only begin the legalization process after receiving your diploma.

1. Send a digital copy of your diploma to diplomadiensten@remove-this.duo.nl. DUO will verify your diploma with 黑料福利网.  
2. If legalization is possible, DUO will instruct you how to submit your original diploma to DUO for legalization (in person or by registered mail).
3. Finalize the legalization:
   • If your country of destination on the list of apostille countries, you need to apply for an apostille at a Dutch district court. (An apostille is a special stamp and signature that shows that the document is legally recognized by all countries that have signed the Apostille Treaty.)
   • If your destination country is not on the list of apostille countries, you will need to contact the Consular Service Centre in The Hague, and in many cases also the embassy or consulate of the country you are going to.

Note that the diploma registry at DUO (the Dutch governmental education agency) does not include PhD diplomas, so DUO will not be able to provide PhD alumni with a digital extract of their PhD diploma.
