We spend most of our lives in a constructed environment. At work, at home, in the garden or walking down the street, even a campsite beside an idyllic lake, our world has been designed and constructed, often by architects.  As we are all part of this environment, we are all, in different ways, stakeholders and users. You may be agitating for better housing, concerned with energy systems, or just enjoying the city; in each case, you are involved in architecture and urban design. We all have experience of the built world, in this program we train you to become an expert in design of the complex world in which we live.

Architects and urban designers have the opportunity to explore these commitments and connections. We understand, analyze and improve our world, by exploring new models for circular materials and equitable economies, exploring the social and political dynamics of housing affordability, increasing wellbeing and public health. To do so, architects and urban designers learn tools and skills for respectful intervention, with an eye to people and the environment, and to the experience of wonder that a building or a city can also provide. Architecture and urban design are dynamic and polyvalent disciplines, requiring skills that are centuries old or just being invented, and committed to a just and beautiful world.

About this master
The Architectural Urban Design and Engineering (AUDE) master track consists of two main disciplines: Architecture and Urbanism. Depending on the direction you choose, you are trained as an architect or urban designer. The difference between the two lies mainly in the scale of the research problem and the design intervention . Architects operate at the scale of the building, reaching to the landscape surround or even the district or ensemble of buildings; or can reach into the interior, at the scale of the window or wall, details of a kitchen or bedroom. Urban design moves out from the buildings scale, beyond the precinct, to the neighborhood or the city, encompassing the social and design aspects that keep a city healthy, dynamic, and equitable. In both tracks, you learn to design:  to analyze challenges and offer spatial, material or technological opportunities for improving people’s lives. . In both tracks, you research site and typology, understand social needs and how to program possible futures, analyze precedents and best practices, and explore theories and methods focused on innovation.

Do you have an analytical mind, and a creative, explorative spirit? Is it your dream to make a valuable contribution to the built environment, and to think about the spatial design challenges of today and tomorrow? And can you argue coherently, communicate through words and images the clarity of your ideas and their potential outcomes? Then the Architectural Urban Design and Engineering (AUDE) master track is the program for you. Students following these tracks maintain close contact with related disciplines inside and outside the Built Environment – including structural and thermodynamics, real estate and smart systems, and the range of scientific knowledge appropriate to material innovation.  Students are open to the insights of others – fellow students, faculty, visiting professionals and community representative – and enjoy exchanging knowledge among themselves. These are just a few of the ingredients in a dynamic, interactive and, above all, intensive program that demands ambition and focus from its students, and delivers even more in return.

The Architectural Urban Design and Engineering master track is characterized by its personalized and independent approach, by a versatile and coherent program, and by a convivial, committed atmosphere. You have all the space you need to shape your program individually, and the lines of communication between students and lecturers are close and substantive. You can opt for the customized program, which entitles you to admission – as an architect or urban planner – directly to the Register of Architects.

There is also a range of additional options that will help you stand out in the crowd, such as .

Looking for an extra challenge? Then combine your studies with . A popular and common combination is Architecture and Urbanism, but you can also combine Architecture with Structural Design and Engineering, Building Physics or Urban Systems & Real Estate.
