Fusion energy has the potential to provide abundant, carbon-free electricity and is widely recognized as one of the most promising solutions to the global energy challenge. As investment in fusion research and technology continues to grow worldwide, so does the demand for scientists and engineers who can help make fusion power a reality.

The Master's program in Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion at Eindhoven University of Technology combines plasma physics, materials science, and engineering to prepare you for this rapidly evolving field. You will develop the knowledge and practical skills to understand fusion plasmas, design reactor technologies, and address the scientific and engineering challenges involved in developing future fusion power plants. Through close collaboration with researchers, international partners, and the European fusion community, you will work on real-world challenges while building a strong foundation for a career in research or high-tech industry. Located in Brainport Eindhoven, ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø offers an environment where science, engineering, and innovation come together.

If you are bright, ambitious, and ready for a serious challenge, and if you share a passion for high-tech innovation and a commitment to sustainability, this program will prepare you to lead in the emerging fusion energy revolution.

You can also choose to combine this master’s program with Applied PhysicsElectrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering as a â€˜double degree’. This requires half a year to a year of extra study.

What will you learn?

The Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion master's program combines advanced physics with engineering to prepare you for the challenges of developing future fusion energy systems. Throughout the program, you will build a broad understanding of fusion science while developing the technical and professional skills needed to contribute to this rapidly advancing field.

You will study how fusion plasmas behave, how they can be confined and controlled, and how engineering solutions enable the design of safe, efficient, and reliable fusion reactors. Courses cover topics such as plasma physics, magnetic confinement, plasma heating, diagnostics, plasma-wall interactions, fusion materials and nuclear aspects. At the same time, you will strengthen your skills in computational modeling, data analysis, systems thinking, and scientific communication.

A key feature of the program is its multidisciplinary approach. Through challenge-based learning, you will work in teams on authentic problems inspired by current developments in fusion research. These projects connect scientific theory with engineering practice and help you develop the collaboration and problem-solving skills required in international research environments.

The program also offers flexibility to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals. Through electives, you can specialize in areas such as:

  • Plasma physics and radiation
  • Magnetic confinement and magnetohydrodynamics
  • Plasma heating and diagnostics
  • Plasma-wall interactions and fusion materials
  • Control engineering
  • Systems engineering
  • Data processing and computational methods

During your studies, you will explore scientific and engineering challenges related to ITER and future commercial fusion reactors while working with researchers and experts from different disciplines. Whether you continue with a PhD, pursue a career at a research institute, or join the high-tech industry, you will graduate with the knowledge, research experience, and analytical skills to contribute to the future of fusion energy and other advanced technologies.
