Degree structure
Over the course of two years and 120 ECTS credits, you gradually move from a broad mathematical foundation toward more specialized applications and independent work.
In your first semester, you build core mathematical knowledge across three IAM learning lines: Continuous Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, and Stochastics.
You also develop a research programming toolkit while discovering interests and the area you want to specialize in.
After a semester of fundamental courses from these learning lines, you can specialize in areas that match your interests and ambitions by choosing specialization electives. Within these specializations, you combine IAM courses with selected courses from other ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø programs and MasterMath offerings from Dutch universities.
You also have the flexibility to further shape your program through free electives, an internship, or an international exchange.
The program concludes with a master thesis project in which you use your mathematical knowledge in an independent research or applied problem within academia, industry, or a research institute.

While deepening your knowledge through the core electives, you will further develop as an applied mathematician through two unique courses: Toolkit of Computation and Professional Portfolio.
Toolkit of Computation offers a hands-on introduction to structured, reproducible, and performance-oriented programming for mathematical research through challenge-based learning.
Professional Portfolio helps you explore both your academic path and future career while strengthening essential professional skills, including collaboration, leadership, presentation, writing, ethics, and scientific integrity.
You will conclude the Professional Portfolio with a Modelling Week, during which you work in a team on a real-world industry problem. You translate the challenge into a mathematical model, develop a solution, and present your findings to the problem owner and your ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø supervisor.
Other electives
You have the flexibility to tailor your program to your interests. You can choose courses from other ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø master’s programs, follow MasterMath courses at Dutch universities, or take interdisciplinary subjects to broaden your perspective. You can do an internship, international exchange, or educational minor, depending on your study goals and planning.
Graduation project
The master’s program concludes with a 30 ECTS thesis project. In this project, you work independently on a mathematical or computational problem within a university research group, research institute, or company.
During the thesis, you deepen your expertise in a chosen area and demonstrate your ability to independently analyze complex problems, develop mathematical models, and derive meaningful solutions. The project forms the final step of the program and brings together the knowledge and skills developed throughout your studies.
