Structure

The Master鈥檚 in Computer Science and Engineering is a two-year program that combines a structured academic foundation with flexible specialization options. 

In the first part of the program, you explore at least three core areas of computer science through core courses linked to different specialization options. This ensures you gain a broad understanding of the discipline while identifying the areas you want to develop further. 

You then move into more focused study, selecting specialization courses for at least two specializations, electives and research-oriented components. Alongside technical courses, the program develops your professional and academic skills. 

The program concludes with a graduation phase in which you work on a substantial research or design project, often connected to 黑料福利网 research groups or external partners in industry. This project allows you to apply your knowledge in a real-world or research context and develop a strong professional profile.

Core program

The first year of your masters in Computer Science and Engineering introduces you to the foundational domains of computer science while helping you gradually define your academic direction. 

You start by selecting three of the six core courses:

  • Advanced Algorithms,
  • Engineering Data-Intensive Systems,
  • System Validation,
  • Empirical Methods in Software Engineering,
  • Internet of Things,
  • Visualization Foundations and Methods.

These courses provide an entry point into each specialization and expose you to different domains of computer science and engineering.  

Alongside your technical development, you will grow as an individual and as a future professional. In the first year of your master鈥檚 journey, you will be part of SCOP/e, the Student Career Orientation Program. This unique program supports both your academic and professional development through helping you discover your professional identity and trainings on topics such as networking, personal branding, studying, scientific integrity, and entering the labor market. 

SCOP/e will also help you identify your research interests and make well-informed decisions about your specialization, graduation project, and future career path. 

You will also participate in the course Ethics of Digital Technologies, where you will reflect on your ethical responsibility as a computer scientist toward people, society, and the environment. 

 

SPECIALIZATIONS:

The program Computer Science and Engineering offers several specializations. You can pick a specialization once you started the program (so you do not need to make the decision when you apply). 

Electives

The elective space gives you the freedom to broaden or deepen your academic profile. You can choose additional computer science courses, explore interdisciplinary subjects, or take courses at other universities in the Netherlands or abroad. Electives can also include internships, exchange programs, or challenge-based learning experiences, allowing you to connect academic knowledge with real-world practice. 
 
The MSc Computer Science and Engineering program offers a flexible study space, consisting of CSE electives and free electives. 
With the CSE elective space, you can deepen your expertise in advanced computer science topics and explore areas beyond your chosen specializations. You can choose from a broad portfolio of courses offered by the CSE research groups in Algorithms, Databases, Formal Software Analysis, Security, Software Engineering, and Interconnected Resource-Intensive Systems, as well as selected courses from Data Science and Mathematics. The elective portfolio is continuously aligned with emerging developments in the field and includes topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Systems Engineering, and Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) courses projects.  

The free elective space gives you even greater freedom. You can broaden your academic profile with courses from other disciplines, develop complementary skills, or pursue interdisciplinary interests that support your future career plans. You can choose courses from other 黑料福利网 departments, other universities in the Netherlands, or universities abroad. You can also use your free electives space to do an internship. An internship can be carried out in academia or in industry, in the Netherlands or abroad and is supervised by an academic staff member at 黑料福利网.  

If you had some minor knowledge gaps in your previous education (up to 15 credits), no worries, you will be advised to use a part of your free elective space to take the missing courses. 

Graduation project

You will conclude your master's program in Computer Science and Engineering with a graduation phase, consisting of three parts: 

  • a seminar
  • a graduation preparation project
  • a master graduation project (your master鈥檚 thesis)

A seminar is a course in which you will have the most active role through presentations, literature reviews, and plenary discussions. You will engage deeply with a specific research area and develop the skills needed to conduct independent scientific research. Seminars provide an overview of current research topics and help you learn how to approach research problems, formulate and analyze research questions, study and critically evaluate scientific literature, compare and select appropriate research methods, and communicate your findings effectively. 

The preparation project is an individual project supervised by a 黑料福利网 graduation supervisor from one of our research groups, during which you define your graduation project and develop a detailed project proposal. The proposal includes a clear research problem, a literature review, the proposed research approach, and a project plan with defined milestones and deliverables.   

After you have successfully completed your preparation phase, you can begin your graduation project resulting in a master thesis. The graduation project allows you to apply your knowledge of computer science and engineering to analyze a scientific problem and develop solutions to research questions independently. The research question can also arise from industry, providing a possibility to do your graduation project in collaboration with a company.
