Research themes and impact

Fusion energy is one of today's most ambitious scientific and engineering challenges. At ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø, research within the Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion program combines expertise in plasma physics, materials science, diagnostics, computational modeling, and engineering to advance the development of future fusion reactors.

Research focuses on understanding the behavior of fusion plasmas, developing materials that can withstand extreme conditions, improving plasma diagnostics and control, and modeling complex fusion systems. These research activities are closely connected to international developments in fusion energy and contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy technologies.

As a student, you become part of this research environment through coursework, challenge-based learning, internships, and your graduation project. You will work with researchers from different disciplines and gain experience with current scientific and engineering challenges.

Meet our leading researchers and professors

Our academic staff combines expertise in physics and engineering and plays an active role in national and international collaborations in the field of nuclear fusion. Their research covers areas including plasma physics, reactor technology, advanced materials, diagnostics, computational modelling, and systems engineering.

Learn from leading researchers

Our faculty members combine teaching with internationally recognised research. As active researchers, they bring the latest scientific developments into the classroom and personally supervise students during internships and graduation projects.

During your internship and graduation project, you'll become part of an international research environment, collaborating with researchers, PhD candidates and fellow Master's students while contributing to ongoing research with real-world impact.

Labs & facilities

During the program, you have access to a range of laboratories and computational facilities that support both education and research.

  • Plasma laboratories– Explore plasma behavior and experimental diagnostic techniques. The ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø Plasma Lab, focusing on education, and the DIFFER Magnum PSI facility, giving access to a world leading fusion research facility.
  • Materials characterization facilities â€“ Study materials for extreme fusion environments.
  • High-performance computing â€“ Model plasma behavior and simulate complex physical systems.
  • Diagnostics and measurement facilities â€“ Learn how advanced measurement techniques support fusion research.

Collaborative Ecosystem

Fusion research is inherently international and multidisciplinary. ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø collaborates with universities, research institutes, and industry partners to connect education with ongoing developments in fusion science and technology.

Located in Brainport Eindhoven, the university benefits from a strong high-tech ecosystem where physics, engineering, and innovation come together. Collaborations with organizations such as  and  provide opportunities for internships, graduation projects, and research collaborations, while also connecting students to the broader European fusion community.
