A specialization within MSc Applied Physics

Theoretical and Computational Physics

Understand Physics Through Theory and Computation

The Theoretical and Computational Physics specialization is for students who enjoy using mathematics, models and simulations to understand physical phenomena. Rather than focusing on one specific application area, this specialization brings together the theoretical and computational expertise of the Department of Applied Physics and shows how these methods are applied across many fields within Applied Physics.

You learn how mathematical models and computer simulations can be used to describe, analyse and predict physical systems. Whether your interests lie in quantum physics, fluid dynamics, plasmas, nanophysics, photonics or advanced materials and soft matter, the specialization offers the flexibility to explore different research areas while building a strong foundation in theory and computation.

Because theoretical and computational research is embedded across many research groups within the Department of Applied Physics, you can apply these methods to a wide range of topics and choose a graduation project that matches your interests. Working alongside researchers, you'll learn how theory and computation help us understand physical phenomena and contribute to technological innovation.

Why choose this specialization?

  • Learn how mathematics, models and simulations reveal the physics behind complex systems.
  • Apply theoretical and computational methods across multiple areas of Applied Physics.
  • Benefit from the theoretical and computational expertise of the Department of Applied Physics.
  • Tailor your electives, internship and graduation project to your own interests.

What will I learn and do?

The Theoretical and Computational Physics specialization teaches you how to tackle problems that are difficult, expensive or sometimes impossible to study experimentally. You learn how to describe physical systems using mathematical models, perform simulations and use analytical and computational tools to gain new insights.

Depending on your interests, you can explore topics ranging from quantum physics and fluid dynamics to plasmas, photonics, nanophysics and advanced materials. Recommended specialization electives provide additional depth in areas related to computational and mathematical physics. Examples include chaos, ultracold quantum physics, advanced electrodynamics, computational fluid and plasma dynamics, polymer physics, soft matter, nanophotonics and semiconductor nanophysics.

Throughout the specialization, you learn how to formulate scientific questions, develop mathematical models, analyse complex systems and communicate your findings effectively. You also gain experience with scientific computing and learn how to combine physics, mathematics and computation to understand and predict physical behaviour.

Because theoretical and computational methods are used throughout the Department of Applied Physics, the specialization offers considerable flexibility when choosing electives, internships and your graduation project.

These skills prepare you for careers in research and development, modelling and simulation, data-driven innovation and doctoral studies.
