A specialization within MSc Applied Physics and MSc Industrial Applied Mathematics

Quantum Science and Technology

Explore the future through Quantum Science and Technology

Quantum technologies are transforming the way we compute, communicate and measure the world around us. In the Quantum Science and Technology specialization, you explore the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics and their applications in quantum computing, communication, sensing and materials. Combining theoretical foundations with practical applications, this specialization prepares you to contribute to one of the fastest-growing fields in science and technology.

Quantum Science and Technology is a joint initiative of the Departments of Applied Physics and Mathematics & Computer Science. Students from both programmes share a common foundation in quantum science and technology while following a curriculum tailored to their own discipline. Within Applied Physics, Quantum Science and Technology is offered as a specialization; within Mathematics & Computer Science, it is offered as a track. Interested in the Mathematics & Computer Science track? Explore the track here. (link)

Why choose this specialization?

  • Explore the principles behind quantum technologies.
  • Combine theory with applications in computing, communication, sensing and materials.
  • Prepare for a rapidly growing field in science and technology.
  • Benefit from a unique collaboration between the Departments of Applied Physics and Mathematics & Computer Science.

What will I learn and do?

You develop a deep understanding of quantum mechanics and learn how quantum effects can be harnessed for computation, communication and sensing. The curriculum covers topics such as quantum information theory, quantum algorithms, quantum-secure communication, integrated photonics, quantum materials, cryptography and quantum hardware.

Depending on your elective courses and graduation project, you can focus on areas such as quantum information and algorithms, quantum hardware and characterization, quantum communication and cryptography, integrated quantum photonics, and the foundations of quantum physics and quantum materials.

You learn how to connect abstract concepts with real-world quantum systems and develop the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to tackle challenging questions in research and technology. You also gain experience working independently and in multidisciplinary teams, preparing you for careers in research, the high-tech industry and doctoral studies.
