Discover How Physics Controls Living and Soft Materials
Life and soft materials are governed by physical principles that can be explored, understood and controlled. In the Biophysics and Soft Matter specialization, you take a physics-first approach to studying complex systems, from cells and biomolecules to polymers and colloids. Using quantitative analysis, theoretical modeling and advanced experiments, you investigate how these systems behave across different length and time scales. By combining fundamental physics with interdisciplinary applications, you contribute to challenges in healthcare, nanotechnology and sustainable materials. This specialization prepares you to bridge the gap between physics, biology and chemistry and to develop innovative solutions for real-world problems.
Why choose this specialization?
- Use physics to understand living systems and soft materials.
- Work across physics, chemistry and biomedical engineering.
- Contribute to innovations in healthcare and sustainable materials.
What will I learn and do?
You develop a quantitative understanding of living systems and soft matter and learn how physical principles govern the behavior of complex systems. The specialization combines theory, simulations and experiments, allowing you to connect fundamental insights with practical applications.
You study topics such as statistical physics, biophysics, active matter and soft condensed matter. Through laboratory work and research projects, you gain hands-on experience with advanced microscopy, rheology, optical scattering methods and single-molecule sensing. Computational tools and data analysis help you investigate systems across multiple scales.
Depending on your elective courses and graduation project, you can focus on areas such as cellular and molecular biophysics, active matter and self-organization, polymers and colloidal systems, molecular biosensors and functional soft materials.
Along the way, you learn how to formulate scientific questions, design experiments, analyze complex data and communicate your findings effectively. You also gain experience working independently and collaborating across disciplines, preparing you for careers in research, high-tech industry or a PhD.
