Nature-inclusive building design creates opportunities for species such as bats, birds, and insects to coexist with people in the built environment. As urbanization continues and natural habitats disappear, buildings can play an important role in supporting biodiversity by providing safe and suitable places for wildlife to shelter, nest, and thrive.

Drawing on expertise in architecture, building technology, and ecology, the Natuur-Inbouw project explored how biodiversity can be integrated into everyday building practice through innovative and practical design solutions. The project focused on developing, testing, and validating building components and details that meet the needs of wildlife while remaining feasible, durable, and attractive from a construction and design perspective.

Through research, simulations, prototyping, and industry collaboration, the project demonstrates how nature-inclusive solutions can be successfully integrated into both new and existing buildings. By translating ecological knowledge into practical design strategies, it helps designers, builders, and policymakers create healthier, more resilient environments for both people and wildlife.

This work shows that biodiversity and high-quality architecture can go hand in hand, contributing to a more sustainable and nature-positive built environment.
