Make a difference by designing the medical technologies of the future

Develop a blood vessel implant that grows with the body. Activate immune cells to fight cancer cells, using nanotechnology. Redesign the body's own fat cells to deliver chemotherapy to the brain. The Medical Sciences and Technology program at ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø trains you to build bridges between science and the latest healthcare technology.

With a strong focus on societal challenges, you will combine knowledge from medical sciences with engineering. You will learn to understand processes in the human body ánd you develop a solid base in technical subjects – a unique combination. Within our challenge-based and practice-oriented education, you will acquire all the knowledge and skills you need to design technology that saves lives. Sometimes with students from your own study program, and sometimes in multidisciplinary teams with students from other programs. This way, you learn to bridge the gap between technology and the world around you even before you start your career. And that is exactly what society needs right now.

BROAD FIRST YEAR, FOLLOWED BY ELECTIVE SPACE

In the first year, you will acquire a solid, broad foundation, after which you follow one of our two core programs: Biomedical Engineering (BME) or Medical Sciences and Technology (MST).

Both programs are a combination of natural sciences and technical subjects, but each has its own emphasis. In BME, the emphasis on the engineering side, with technology as the starting point. You will work on technological applications for patients. In MST, you will take more biology and chemistry courses and delve deeper into the biomedical background of diseases, using technology as a tool.

Because the first year is the same for both programs, you can easily switch programs during the first year. You can read more about the curriculum under Degree structure.

WHY MEDICAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY IN EINDHOVEN?

  • If you can’t decide between biology, chemistry, physics and math
  • If you miss the technical component in programs like Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
  • If you are curious and want to know how the human body works
  • If you want to help patients, but without being in direct contact with them
  • If you want to turn your ideals into technological applications in healthcare

Then our Medical Sciences and Technology program might be the right fit for you! Talk to one of our students to see if this program fits your interests.

THE ADVANTAGES OF STUDYING AT THE ONLY DUTCH DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

We are the only department of Biomedical Engineering in the Netherlands. From day one, we pioneer the healthcare technologies of the future with our head, our hands, and our heart. Because research from different disciplines is brought together within one department, you will be taught by leading experts in the field, learn about the human body, and apply your knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, and mechanical engineering. There is a direct link to practice within hospitals and industry in the Brainport region, the high-tech ecosystem of Europe. Because the department is relatively small, there is a lot of personal contact between students and lecturers, and you will receive good guidance with plenty of room for your own choices.

ADMISSION

Medical Sciences and Technology is a challenging program. You have a VWO diploma, with Mathematics B, Physics, and Chemistry. In addition, you have affinity for technology. Before you can start this Bachelor's program, you must complete a study choice check. For more information, see Studychoichecheck.

Because this program is partially taught in Dutch, a Dutch language requirement applies in addition to the English language requirement.

Study association Protagoras

Protagoras is the study association for students of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The board is entirely composed of students who are voluntarily committed to making a positive contribution to all facets of your student life: education, development and leisure. For instance, Protagoras is engaged in book sales. As a member, you can also use their digital exam and subject database as practice material. Naturally, they also facilitate the necessary off-time, with a wide range of activities: from drinks and theme parties to an annual symposium. Together with the department, Protagoras also organizes various professional orientation activities, such as lectures and company visits.
