Starting from academic year 2027/2028, the bachelor's program will be offered in two tracks: Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and Scheikundige Technologie. Both tracks have the same curriculum, courses, and learning outcomes. The only difference is the language of instruction.

  • Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is taught entirely in English and has a selection procedure.
  • Scheikundige Technologie is taught bilingually (Dutch and English) and does not have a selection procedure.

What's in the program?

What do artificial heart valves, renewable energy, plastic sandwich bags, and medicines have in common? Chemical engineers were at the cradle of these phenomena. As a chemical engineer, you design responsive materials for soft robotics, find cleaner sources of energy, and develop off-grid mini-plants to produce cheap chemicals (e.g. fertilizer). Therefore, highly educated engineers in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry are always in high demand.

Chemical Engineering and Chemistry are about societal issues but also about small, useful applications in daily life. As a chemical engineer, you sometimes work at the nanoscale - designing new molecules and developing smart materials. However, you can also work at the macroscale - optimizing and scaling up production processes. The applications are limitless: treating illnesses, preventing scarcity of natural resources such as water and oil, or inventing intelligent textile fibers and smart packaging materials.

Multidisciplinary education

The Bachelor's program in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry is a study program where you learn from various disciplines, so you develop skills necessary for every engineer. The research is broad and has a great reach into other specializations. This is also reflected in the study program, which contains themes relevant to society, such as sustainable energy and health. The disciplines you will be studying include:

  • Chemistry
    Much like the chemistry you had in high school, you learn about how molecules are composed and how to synthesize them.
  • Materials science
    You learn how substances behave and how to assign specific characteristics to molecules, for instance, to make a breathable raincoat.
  • Process engineering
    How do you arrange that processes developed on a small scale in the lab, such as creating a self-healing coating for smartphones, can be executed continuously and on a large scale?

Our multidisciplinary way of working, which allows for a lot of freedom to design your own study program, gives you the necessary comprehensive insight into developing new substances and materials and the ability to analyze and fine-tune processes.

You learn about the cohesion between various disciplines during design projects. You will also learn which specialism fits you best and where you want to develop your knowledge. Moreover, you learn how to bring various specialisms together. For instance, by working in teams on multidisciplinary design assignments.

Our study program is one of the biggest in the Netherlands when it comes to chemical engineering. The lecturers and professors put a lot of their time into doing research. They implement new results from the research immediately in the lectures. This way, you are always up to date with the latest developments in your field. The study program is both nationally and globally renowned since our department conducts a lot of application-oriented research, often in close collaboration with the chemical industry. In fact, the Chemical Engineering part of our study program has the IChemE label, this label is a testimony to the high standard of education. Study association T.S.V. 'Jan Pieter Minckelers' (Japie)

T.S.V. 'Jan Pieter Minckelers', otherwise called 'Japie', is the study association of the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Japie is an association for and run by students that protects the interests of the students at the department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, and offers them possibilities for personal development. On the one hand, they try to show the students their subject area from a different angle, by organizing excursions, talks and symposia and a study tour. On the other hand, the association organizes sports tournaments, parties, weekly drinks, fun weekends and other types of leisure activities to strengthen the bonds between its members.

  • a - To whom does selection and placement apply?

    The selection and placement procedure applies to everyone who wishes to start in the first year of one of the bachelor’s programs listed above for the first time.

    This also applies to:

    • current ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø students enrolled in another program who wish to switch to a numerus fixus program and start in the first year of that program;
    • applicants who have previously participated in the selection procedure and were offered a place, but ultimately did not start the program.

     

     

     

  • b - Why do I (as Dutch student) need a DigiD and how can I apply for one?

    If you are a Dutch student, you will need a DigiD to apply through Studielink. This applies to both numerus fixus programs and programs without selection.

    Make sure you apply for your DigiD well in advance, preferably at least one month before you submit your application, as the application and activation process may take several days. You can apply for a DigiD via .

  • c - How many numerus fixus programs can I apply for?

    You may apply for a maximum of two numerus fixus programs per academic year.

    Please note: for the programs Medicine, Oral Health Sciences, Physiotherapy, and Dentistry, you may only apply to one university or university of applied sciences per academic year.

    By law, you may participate in the selection procedure for the same program a maximum of three times. Educational institutions may set a lower limit, but not a higher one. ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø follows the legal maximum, which means you may participate in the selection procedure for the same program up to three times.

  • d - Can I prepare for the selection process?

    You can prepare for the selection procedure by learning as much as possible about the program. For example, consider whether the program truly matches your interests, skills, and expectations. It is also important to familiarize yourself with the selection procedure, deadlines, and other important dates well in advance.

    Any additional preparation requirements vary by program. Therefore, always consult the program-specific information for the program you wish to apply to.

  • f - How is my ranking decided?

    Your ranking number is determined based on several selection criteria.

    The ranking is established using:

    (a) your grade point average (GPA); and
    (b) the results of one or more tests and/or assignments that are part of the program's selection procedure.

    Exception: for the Mechanical Engineering program, the ranking is based solely on the results of the selection tests. Your GPA is not taken into account.

  • g - What is the result of participating in the selection?

    On April 15, you will receive an email via Studielink containing only your ranking number. Therefore, make sure to keep an eye on your inbox.

    If your ranking number falls within the program's capacity, meaning within the number of available places, you will receive a separate email from Studielink offering you a place in the program. Through Studielink, you can either accept or decline this offer. You must do so within 14 days of receiving the message.

  • h - How do I provide my grades?

    Shortly after submitting your application, you will receive a request to submit your grades. To do so, you must upload a certified copy of your grade list and enter your grades via a dedicated application website.

    A certified copy is a copy of your diploma or grade list that has been provided with an original stamp and signature from your (secondary) school. By doing so, the school confirms that the copy is a true representation of the original document.

  • i - How does ºÚÁϸ£ÀûÍø calculate the average fifth grade pre-university grade ("5-Vwo") or GPA?

    To calculate your vwo 5 grade average or GPA, we add up all the grades listed on your VWO 5 grade list that you have entered during the application process. We then divide this total by the number of subjects. The result is rounded to two decimal places.

    Only subjects that are part of the Central Written Examinations (CSE) according to the 2027 Examenblad are included in the calculation. If Mathematics D (Wiskunde D) is part of your curriculum, this subject is also included in the GPA calculation.

  • j - For one course I don't have a number, instead I have received a letter grade (V, G,O etc.). What should I fill in?

    If you received a letter grade for a subject instead of a numerical grade, please convert it to a number using the table below:

    • ZS (Very poor) → 1
    • S (Poor) → 2
    • RO (Insufficient) → 3
    • O (Unsatisfactory) → 4
    • M (Moderate) → 5
    • V (Sufficient) → 6
    • RV (More than sufficient) → 7
    • G (Good) → 8
    • ZG (Very good) → 9
    • U (Excellent/Outstanding) → 10
  • k - My grades include decimals, but I can only enter whole numbers. What should I do?

    If your grades include decimals, you must round them to a whole number before entering them.

    Use the following rounding scheme:

    • 0.000 - 0.499 → 0
    • 0.500 - 1.499 → 1
    • 1.500 - 2.499 → 2
    • 2.500 - 3.499 → 3
    • 3.500 - 4.499 → 4
    • 4.500 - 5.499 → 5
    • 5.500 - 6.499 → 6
    • 6.500 - 7.499 → 7
    • 7.500 - 8.499 → 8
    • 8.500 - 9.499 → 9
    • 9.500 - 9.999 → 10
  • l - What happens when I have the exactly same ranking number as somebody else?

    It is possible for two applicants to achieve exactly the same score in the selection procedure. In that case, the VWO 5 grade average or GPA is used as a tie-breaker. The applicant with the higher grade average will receive the higher ranking number.

    If the VWO 5 grade averages are also exactly the same, the higher ranking number will be determined by a lottery draw.

  • m - I have dyslexia/dyscalculia. What do I need to take into consideration?

    If you have dyslexia and/or dyscalculia, you must submit a valid dyslexia or dyscalculia statement no later than January 22. Only statements submitted before this deadline can be taken into account during the selection procedure.

    Do you require accommodations during the selection procedure due to a disability or learning difference, such as dyslexia or dyscalculia? Please indicate this when submitting your application in Studielink. If you did not do so, please email your request to esa.planningsupportcenter@tue.nl no later than January 15.
